How Scott Bacon Became Canada’s Top White Belt
I found BJJ in 2011 after I got tired of running and cross fit. I was taking Spanish lessons in downtown Toronto and I was looking for a martial art to take on the side for fun. However once I went to my first class that was it – I was hooked! I stopped learning Spanish unfortunately but I gained an amazingly positive force in my life.
Ive made many new friends and enjoyed sharing this sport with them. The coolest part is travelling all over for competitions and always feeling at home because of the BJJ community that exists. A truly amazing community based on an awesome sport made up of good people.
I won the Grappling Industries Mundials edition trip to the worlds in February at Ryerson University. In the heavyweight division I had 4 matches and then 3 more matches in the absolute for the prize. I won 5 of my 7 matches by submission and 2 on points. There were many tough competitors in those divisions.
Ive been preparing for the worlds since beginning training just less than 2 years ago. Since I began training, except for when I have been injured, I have trained 6 days a week and typically twice a day. This consists of regular classes, conditioning and light drilling. So far I have competed in 9 tournaments as a white belt. The worlds will be number 10 and I am gunning hard for gold.
Many thanks to Grappling Industries for being the only organizer to offer such an amazing white belt prize not only once but twice! In addition none of this would have come to be without the support and guidance of my family , my coach Elliot Bayev and everyone one at OpenMat MMA.
