Joshua Jerome On Being the 14 Year Old Blue Belt
Who said 14 year olds cannot do anything then play video games? Well let me tell you, I am not that type of kid. For the last 6 years I have been involved in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and it has been the best 6 years of my life. Being a young kid involved in BJJ is not easy. I have been told many times I am too young to accomplish many goals and been told I should just train and wait until I am older to get involved with the grappling community and to compete.
However, that is not what I am all about. Although I love to train the sport, being part of the community is just as important to me. To prove how important being in the grappling community is, I have started my own company called Grappling Promotions along side my training partner, Ergys Sigeta. Grappling Promotions aims to be the distributor of grappling tournament dates, hosting, and updates to the public. Our online Facebook page has a calendar that provides grappling events on it throughout Ontario and Quebec and updates all the information as it is released. I have also become the youngest Referee in Ontario for BJJ thanks to Grappling Industries and I strive not to just be the youngest, but the greatest. I may look small and young, but let me tell you, working with older people is awesome! I look forward to going to the tournaments to see my colleagues and fellow competitors that I am happy to be part of a sport that accepts people of all sizes, belts and ages.
As a young 14 year old boy who dedicates his time to training the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 6 days a week, I never feel upset heading to class to train at Revolution MMA or head to any tournament because I am always greeted by such wonderful people that love the things I do.
However, in my opinion, the community needs to pay more attention to the kids of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they are the future champions. I love to compete but sometimes I feel that there needs to be prizes for the kids and recognition that they are there training just as hard as the adults are! I train with adults every day at the gym and train harder than they do. I am at the gym to train to be the best. Nothing else.
